Weed Control

Why Control Weeds?

Weed control is a targeted approach to eliminating unwanted plants that compete with your grass for water, nutrients, and space. We use both pre-emergent and post-emergent herbicides to prevent weeds from sprouting and to eliminate those that have already taken hold in your lawn.

Think of weeds as uninvited guests at a dinner party – they show up, eat all the food, and make everything look messy. Weeds are aggressive competitors that rob your grass of the nutrients and water it needs to thrive. A single dandelion can have roots that extend up to 10 inches deep, essentially stealing moisture and nutrients from a large area around it.

More on Weed Control

Beyond just being unsightly, weeds create weak spots in your lawn that invite more problems. Where weeds die back in winter, they leave bare patches that become perfect landing spots for new weeds in spring. It’s a cycle that gets worse each year if left untreated.

Colorado’s climate presents unique challenges for weed control. Our intense sun, temperature swings, and variable moisture create stress on grass, making it more vulnerable to weed invasion. Meanwhile, many common weeds like dandelions, clover, and crabgrass are perfectly adapted to these conditions and can quickly take over stressed turf areas.

Pre-Emergent vs. Post-Emergent: Pre-emergent herbicides work like an invisible barrier on your soil, preventing weed seeds from germinating. Think of it as putting up a “No Vacancy” sign before the weeds even think about moving in. Post-emergent herbicides target weeds that are already growing, essentially evicting the troublemakers that managed to sneak past your defenses.

  • Timing is critical – pre-emergent applications need to happen before soil temperatures reach the point where weed seeds germinate, typically in early spring
  • A thick, healthy lawn is your best defense against weeds. Proper fertilization and watering create conditions where grass outcompetes weeds naturally
  • Different weeds require different treatments. Grassy weeds like crabgrass need different herbicides than broadleaf weeds like dandelions
  • Be patient with post-emergent treatments – some stubborn weeds may require multiple applications, especially well-established perennials

We customize our weed control approach based on what’s actually growing in your lawn rather than using a one-size-fits-all treatment. Common Colorado lawn weeds include dandelions, plantain, clover, chickweed, and in summer, the dreaded crabgrass. Each requires a specific approach and timing for effective control.

The key to successful weed control is consistency and patience. Some weeds, particularly deep-rooted perennials, can take multiple seasons to fully eliminate. But with a proper program, you’ll see fewer weeds each year and a lawn that gets thicker and healthier as the grass reclaims the space those weeds once occupied. As always, if you have questions about specific weeds in your lawn or our control methods, give us a call – we’re always happy to help identify what you’re dealing with and explain the best approach.
